Some suggestions on the wiki set-up
Project Pages to control development of this Wiki
The convention for wikis is to use the Project Namespace (which is a synonym for the site name — in this case phpBBdevelopment) to hold the project pages on the management and development of the wiki itself. I observe that you don't do this. I recommend that you follow this practice, but if you want to use an alternative (such as a forum topic then let me know — Terrye 10:18, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
- So far discussion of the wiki itself has mostly taken place on Talk:Main_Page. naderman 16:27, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
- And changes have been announced on phpBBdevelopment:News, although a few things are missing there I guess.
New InterWiki Codes
I was about to put in an interwiki reference (that is something like [[mediawiki:some page|somepage]]) when on preview, I saw that you've removed the default interwikis (which I agree with BTW), but I do suggest that
Perhaps you could either point me to the member of the team that is the lead for maintaining the wiki or where you discuss the policies on the wiki itself. It's just that the convention is that these would be in the Project (aka phpBBdevelopment) namespace, but I can't find anything there, nor the obvious alternatives.
I was going to suggest that you set up sensible interwiki references:
insert into interwiki values ('w','http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/$1',1,0), ('m','http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/$1',1,0), ('mw','http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/$1',1,0), ('phpbbt','http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=$1',1,0), ('phpbbp','http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?p=$1',1,0), ('area51t','http://area51.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=$1',1,0), ('area51p','http://area51.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=$1',1,0);
This allows page content to cross-reference wikimedia (for general definitions), and the wikimedia sites (for wiki documentation and help) as well as topics and posts from the two phpBB forum's in an economic format without generating the external http link graphic.
An example of how you would code these would be [[phpbbt:1715945|Discuss: Significant phpBB (development) changes]] — Terrye 10:18, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
- Actually I haven't deleted any of the default ones. But I've added the ones you suggested anyways. "bug" for the bugtracker, and "php" for the php manual already existed. You could already use "Wikipedia" and "metawikipedia". I guess we should discuss whether we want to change the list though and also get rid of some useless ones. naderman 16:23, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
At the moment the use of categories is minimal. Many pages aren't any category, let alone using multiple categories to provide multiple natural access paths to the wiki content. What are your thoughts on this? — Terrye 10:18, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
I see that you are on an old version of wikimedia. Have you thought of upgrading to current?
Also what extensions do you currently have installed. The wiki version that you are running doesn't seem to have the SpecialPages:Extensions report available. — Terrye 10:18, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
- We should probably upgrade at some point. Mostly a question of when I get around to it I guess. Extensions atm are: Auth_phpBB, ConfirmEdit, phpExtension, SpamBlacklist, syntaxHighlightExtension and UserMerge. Some of them have custom changes.
